        Pogliani Ferdinando (Milano, 1832 - 1899)Attributed to
Italian ivory inlaid table, 19th century
        	Height x width x depth: 83 x 121 x 73 cm

ebonised wood inlaid with elephant ivory (Elephas maximus Linnaeus, 1758 or Loxodonta africana Blumenbach, 1797) with scratch-engraved motifs and Indian ink.
The rectangular table, resting on truncated pyramid-shaped legs, features a richly decorative pattern on its upper surface with intricate details framing two figurative scenes. In the first scene, a half-naked woman is depicted on a small chariot drawn by lions, accompanied by a crocodile, an exotic and mythological symbol. In the second scene, a man is shown on a chariot drawn by dromedaries, evoking an oriental-inspired imagery.
The decorative frame and corners of the table are embellished with foliate and geometric scrollwork motifs that are harmoniously repeated.
The exquisitely crafted table belongs to the typology of works from the workshop of the Milanese ebonist Ferdinando Pogliani (Milan 1832 - 1899). Active for the rich Milanese bourgeoisie, he had a workshop first in Porta Vittoria and later in Montenapoleone. The artist distinguished himself for the exceptional quality of his ivory inlays and the complexity of his figurative decorations, inspired by Neo-Renaissance taste.
Pogliani and his sons were known not only for creating very luxurious furniture, but also for faithfully restoring and reproducing historical furnishings. The style of this table reflects precisely the fusion of Renaissance classicism and 19th century decorative fantasy.
