Jean de Boulogne detto Giambologna (Douai, 1529 - Firenze, 1608)Design by
Architecture, 18th-19th century
Terracotta traces of bronze color; 43 x 17 x 15 cm, without base 33 x 17 x 15 cm
This interesting terracotta model is based on the marble sculpture now kept at the Museo Nazionale del Bargello. There are various bronze copies, the only one signed GIO BOLONGE, is the one in the Museum of Fine Art in Boston. This one shows a pendant around the neck representing the plumb line. In many other versions the plumb line is missing and it is not clear whether these are versions taken from a defective model. Ours is a terracotta version originally bronzed, presumably ancient, dating between the 18th and 19th centuries. Note the absence of the pendant.
