A pair of nautilus shells mounted on bronze bases, late 19th century

Height x width x depth: 46 x 14 x 13 cm.
Geometric base in gilt metal, supported by three elegant leonine legs finely adorned with phytomorphic motifs and culminating in a smooth sphere. From this sphere rises the figure of a winged putto, arms spread, lifting with his right hand the base of a torch β€” a clear reference to the classical iconography of Nike, the personification of Victory. Instead of flames, however, a large Turbo marmoratus shell is set in place, creating a dialogue between Neoclassicism and the aesthetic of the cabinet of curiosities.
