A Russian icon depicting Virgin and Child, 19th century

Height x width x depth: 22.3 x 17.2 x 1.7 cm.
depicting the Mother of God of Kazan. The Mother of God is depicted up to her shoulders, her head slightly inclined towards the Child in a gesture of gentleness, while her hands remain hidden. Christ is depicted standing erect, his right hand raised in a sign of blessing, while his left is concealed by the folds of his cloak.
The icon of Our Lady of Kazan is based on the story of the fire of 1579, a little girl had three visions of Our Lady, who revealed to her the existence of a sacred icon buried under the rubble of their home. Initially her story was ignored, but when the little girl dug, the icon was found intact. The icon became an object of veneration and in 1595 a festival was established in its honour.
