Bronze Crucifix, Probably Italy, 17th - 18th century
Height x width x depth: 33 x 24.5 x 8 cm. Weight: 2110 g.
made of bronze using the lost-wax casting technique. The body of Christ is sculpted with well-defined musculature, emphasising the physical pathos of the suffering figure. The head reclining on the right shoulder, the closed eyes and the face framed by a beard and curly hair, communicate an intense dramatic expressiveness, typical of late Baroque sacred sculpture. The loincloth is essential, tightly knotted on the right hip, from which a soft drape descends, animating the figure. The overlapping feet are nailed together.
