Goldsmith scales, Italy, late 19th early XX century
height x width x depth box: 7 x 28 x 20 cm. Total weight with box: 1796 g.
precision instrument used by goldsmiths to weigh small quantities of precious metals and stones. It has two equal arms, with two saucers suspended from a chain. It is kept in a wooden case to protect it from draughts and dust, elements that could affect the accuracy of the weight. The counterweight was calibrated in grams or carats, and the balance was adjusted very carefully, reflecting the high sensitivity of the instrument. Inside the box, in addition to the balance itself, were calibrated weights. These weights were made with great care and marked with values in grams or carats to ensure accurate measurement.
