Victorian sugar crystal cutter, 19th century

Height x width x depth: 15 x 36 x 10.5 cm. Total weight: 120 g.
cast iron with turned wooden handle, on wooden base. During the Victorian period sugar was sold in large hard blocks, called ‘sugar cones’, and special crystal-cutting pliers were used to break it up into smaller portions. This tool, often made of sturdy metal with decorative handles, as in this case, was present in many middle-class homes and was considered both useful and elegant.
