Italian boxwood Crucifix, 17th century

Height x width x depth: 58 x 36 x 16 cm.
Corpus Christi in boxwood, without cross. The figure of the Saviour is studied in anatomical detail: the arms are outstretched, with the musculature well highlighted; the hands, half-closed, show the stigmata. The head, without the crown of thorns, is reclined towards the right shoulder, facing downwards with closed eyes and half-closed mouth, recalling the suffering expression of the Imago Pietatis, a depiction of the crucifixion used since the 14th century. Long hair falls over the shoulders and back. The bust, slightly bent forward, emphasises the ribs and well-defined musculature and the presence of the cut on the side with the blood, in relief, dripping. The legs are flexed and parallel, as are the feet, on which the stigmata and the image of dripping blood are present. The intimate parts are covered by a loincloth, enriched by a side drape knotted in the centre and held fast by a double rope.
