Russian icon depicting Christ Pantocrator, Early 20th century

Height x width x depth with theca: 28 x 25.5 x 7 cm.
Set in a wooden shrine, the icon depicts Christ the Blesser, one of the most sacred and widespread images in the Orthodox tradition. The term Pantocrator, β€˜Almighty’, emphasises Christ's role as Judge and Lord of the universe. Christ is depicted frontally, with a solemn gaze and thin beard. His right hand is raised in the sign of blessing; in his left hand, he holds the Gospel, open. The richly decorated background features gilding and floral garlands.
