Russian icon depicting Christ Pantocrator, Early 20th century
Height x width x depth with theca: 28 x 25.5 x 7 cm.
Set in a wooden shrine, the icon depicts Christ the Blesser, one of the most sacred and widespread images in the Orthodox tradition. The term Pantocrator, βAlmightyβ, emphasises Christ's role as Judge and Lord of the universe. Christ is depicted frontally, with a solemn gaze and thin beard. His right hand is raised in the sign of blessing; in his left hand, he holds the Gospel, open. The richly decorated background features gilding and floral garlands.
