In wood, on a gilded background, appearing in the center is the half-length figure of St. Peter, recognizable by iconographic characteristic features such as the keys to Heaven, which he holds in his right hand firmly gripped and symbolizing the power conferred on him by Jesus: βTo you I will give the keys of the kingdom of heavenβ (Matthew 16:19); and, again, the scroll in his left hand representing apostolic doctrine and letters. On his right, in a lunette, the figure of Jesus Christ appears in the clouds and addresses him; while in a shrine, also on the right, the standing figure of an archangel appears.
