Russian icon depicting Virgin and Child, 19th century
Height x width x depth: 54 x 44 x 5 cm.
The Smolensk Madonna belongs to the fundamental type of depiction of the Virgin Odigitria, understood as “She who shows the way,” of which she is perhaps the most widespread and popular type in Russia. The Virgin retains the solemnity that distinguishes the Virgin Odigitria canon; she is presented frontally with her head gently tilted toward her son, seated on her left arm, her left hand outstretched toward Jesus Christ.
Jesus Christ is represented by a childlike figure but with adult features and attitudes, while blessing with his right hand and holding a scroll with the divine law in his left hand.
