Russian icon with oklad depicting Anna the Prophetess, Late 19th-early 20th centuries.

Anna the Prophetess (in Russian Анна Пророчица), as described in the Gospel according to Luke, is presented as an elderly woman, belonging to the tribe of Asher, descended from the eighth son of Jacob. According to the Orthodox Church tradition, Anna, along with Simeon, is considered one of the last prophetesses of the Old Testament. Furthermore, Orthodox tradition holds that Christ met His people, Israel, through the figures of Anna and Simeon.
In the icon, Anna is depicted at the center, full-length, surrounded by a rural landscape. Her features are gentle, with her head inclined to the left. In the upper left corner, the figure of Jesus Christ appears among the clouds, symbolizing her role as the presenter of Jesus on Earth.
