Russian Stauroteca icon with bronze cross, enamel, and oklad, 19th century
        	Height x width: 44.5 x 38 cm.

The work depicts Calvary with Jesus crucified and at the sides his Mother, Martha and the centurion Longinus; the cross is a typical Russian Orthodox type and features:

at the top, the figure of Christ the Saviour with a halo and slightly lower, two angels; the Body of Christ is fixed to the Cross with four nails and has his head turned to the right; on the inclined part at the bottom, the fallen Old Jerusalem is depicted, on the opposite side the New Jerusalem rises.
Jesus' death, in the Eastern tradition, is never depicted in the spasm of agony and with the signs of His bloody Passion, but always appears illuminated by a regal nobility.
