Scottish table snuff box, 16th century
Height x width x depth: 15.5 x 22.5 x 16 cm. Weight: 1090 g.
made of ram's horn embellished with silver mounts. The hinged lid bears an engraved coat of arms with the motto “MAY JUSTICE EVER BE OUR GUIDE”. A silver cartouche set along the body of the horn bears an engraved inscription accompanied by the date 1582, attesting to its antiquity. The end of the horn is finished with a silver mount. It is accompanied by a complete set of snuff tools, original to the period, suspended by means of thin silver chains: a hare's foot; a tobacco rake; a perforated spoon for preparing and dispensing snuff; and finally a spike.
