Solomon and Joab in the Temple

Clearly rooted in the Old Testament, the scene may correspond to the episode of Joab’s execution by order of King Solomon (1 Kings 2:28–34). Appointed commander of David’s army, Joab had supported Adonijah against Solomon. Once king, Solomon ordered Benaiah, head of his guard, to kill Joab, who was executed in the temple. The rapid brushwork and the almost impressionistic treatment of forms suggest that this painting is a preparatory sketch for a larger composition. The vibrant palette and elaborate staging clearly connect the work to the Venetian pictorial culture of the mid-18th century.
