The canvas is an early copy of a painting by Marten De Vos dated 1572 and housed in the Staatliches Museum in Schwerin. The painting by De Vos was part of a series dedicated to exotic and fantastic animals commissioned by the Duke of Mecklenburg Johann Albrecht I for the salons of Schwerin Castle.
