D'Annunzio, Gabriele - I taccuini di Cattaro 1917, 1928
This work reproduces the CATTARO NOTEBOOKS, written in pencil by Gabriele d'Annunzio during his flight to Cattaro on October 5, 1917, to communicate his orders to the pilot and machine gunners on board.
Reproduced by the Istituto Nazionale D'Annunzio in a limited edition of just "one hundred" copies, not for sale, with full red morocco binding, blue silk lining, and engraved silver clasps. The cover bears the gold-stamped emblem "FIRST GROUP OF SQUADRILS - HIGHER AND BEYOND."
These are the contents of the notebook, composed of 43 small sheets (13 x 10 cm), squared with text reproduced as accurately as possible from the original penciled by the Commander:
THE OUTWARD ROUTE
Straight to the coast, towards the Bocche di Cattaro - Punta d'Arza - Punta d'Ostro - Todo Bay - The Kaballa batteries - Bombs on Portoro - Crossing the Channel - Two 162 mm bombs on the Kumbur hangar - Two more on Gienovic - On the obstruction of the Channel
THE RETURN ROUTE
To Todo through the Trasle Depression - Four bombs at once on Gienovic - The machine gun in action - "Italiam!" - The coast - Eia! - The Conversano Searchlights - The Landing - AlalΓ
Along with this, another small notebook containing 13 sheets (8.5 x 14.5 cm) in which the Commander captured his sensations of flight by rapidly writing in pencil wonderful soprano notes, which read, among other things, "The Adriatic is calm, subjected to the enchantment of the moon. We are now alone with our fate. The soul becomes equal to the elements, becomes nocturnal and starry. It is suspended between sky and water, like a sphere half filled with water and half with sky. The heart is crossed by a melodious current, as in the beginning of the creation of a poem."
The notebooks were reserved for those subscribers who were the first to secure new subscriptions to the Istituto Nazionale D'Annunzio for editions printed on Japanese paper (the 43-sheet notebook) and on Fabriano paper (the 13-sheet notebook).
In perfect condition, the lot includes the two notebooks in perfect condition and a booklet ALL THE WORKS of Gabriele d'Annunzio, illustrating the work (collected in a modern wooden box)
