Papa PIO IX (Giovanni Mastai-Ferretti; Senigallia, 13 maggio 1792 – Roma, 7 febbraio 1878) - Scienze e Arti, 1867

"The Sciences and the Arts under the Pontificate of Pius IX" - 1860/1867 - Engravings by Paolo Cacchiatelli and Gregorio Cleter, etchings accompanied by critical commentary by Pietro Petri, Francesco Cerroti, Carlo Mascherpa, and Domenico Bonanni.

A majestic and valuable work that represents the desire of Pope Pius IX, pontiff from 1846 to 1870, to disseminate and promote his cultural policy, characterized by significant urban, architectural, and artistic interventions.
The work was conceived to be distributed monthly in installments, with the publication of two plates per month along with accompanying critical apparatus. The publishing venture was funded by Peter's Pence and was enhanced by the decision to entrust its curation to Cacchiatelli and Cleter: the "Editorial Artists" (as they are referred to in the texts of the plates), who created a rich iconographic apparatus that fostered awareness of the pope's commitment.

Two oblong volumes, 39 x 30 cm, hardcover, contemporary binding, blue marbled paper, gilt-embossed faux leather spine and corners. Contains 187 exceptionally beautiful and beautifully crafted engravings, a photographic testimony to the past.
