Battle Scene

Oil on canvas
cm. 61x80. Framed
The painting is accompanied by an expertise by Prof. Antonio Vannugli.
The painting has been confirmed as a work by Antonio Tempesta following an in-person examination by Dr. Francesco Gatta, who will include it in his forthcoming monograph on the artist.

This vigorous and finely executed Battle Scene has been attributed to Antonio Tempesta by Prof. Antonio Vannugli and Francesco Gatta, who recognizes in it the master’s hand and mature style. The composition, animated by the clash of knights and soldiers beneath towering oaks, displays Tempesta’s signature sense of rhythm, precision of drawing, and narrative vitality. A leading interpreter of martial and historical subjects in late sixteenth-century Rome, Tempesta combined the discipline of his Florentine training with a dynamic vision inspired by Tasso’s Gerusalemme Liberata. The painting can be dated to the early seventeenth century, during the artist’s full maturity, and exemplifies his most refined approach to the theme of the “battle without heroes.”
