Bronze sculpture depicting a bacchanal, 19th century
Height x diameter: 51 x 28 cm.
With a brown and gold patina, it depicts two draped bacchantes playing the tambourine and dancing, accompanied by a satyr child feasting on bunches of grapes. Signed ‘Clodion 1762’ and numbered 4908 on the base, it bears the signature ‘Clodion 1762’ on the embankment, the pseudonym of the Lorraine sculptor Claude Michel. A prolific artist, Clodion is famous for winning the Grand Prix de Rome in 1759 and for creating, at the request of Louis XVI, the statue of Montesquieu now on display at the Louvre.
