Commode with ivory inlays, Lombardy, first half of the 18th century
Height x width x depth: 102 x 160 x 72 cm.
with fir wood structure, veneered and inlaid with walnut, olive wood and fruit woods and elephant ivory inlay (Elephas maximus Linnaeus, 1758, or Loxodonta africana Blumenbach, 1797).
The piece features a dynamic front punctuated by three large drawers, each embellished with rich inlaid leaf motifs that create a refined polychromatic effect between the wood and ivory details.
The locks are original and still feature the original ring handles, two for each drawer.
The edges are marked by carved and shaped vertical uprights, which accompany the sinuous profile of the piece down to the solid and austere shelf feet, reflecting the Lombard tradition.
Of particular value is the inlay decoration in ivory and wood, of remarkable finesse and complexity, on the upper surface, decorated with bucolic scenes: the figure of a luthier can be seen at the bottom left, that of a man in motion at the bottom right, and two figures immersed in nature in the central scene, all represented with extraordinary attention to detail.
