Ebonized wood and tortoiseshell coin cabinet Louis XVI, Northern Italy, 18th century
Height x width x depth: 66 x 105 x 32 cm.
with ebonised wood structure, embellished with hawksbill sea turtle (Eretmochelys imbricata, Cheloniidae) and engraved bone inlays.
The cabinet rests on two solid turned feet.
The sides, decorated with geometric motifs obtained through rosewood veneering, feature two bronze handles on each side to facilitate movement. The front is marked by a rigorous symmetry with sixteen small drawers (4 on each side, 8 in total per side), each equipped with a lock and characterised by engraved bone frames that enclose tortoiseshell panels with a lively marbled effect. In the centre is an imposing architectural door, decorated with columns and classical motifs in bone and tortoiseshell, which rests on an additional drawer, also equipped with a lock. Opening the door reveals an interior with two small, elegantly finished internal drawers, designed to store the most precious objects. The drawers are lined with rosewood. The upper part of the cabinet is embellished with an openwork railing crown, punctuated by turned elements and pinnacles, which gives the whole piece a sense of momentum and monumentality.
