Pair of alabaster vases, Urbino, 16th century

Height x diameter: 44 x 22 cm.
composed of various pieces so that they could be easily dismantled and transported. The marble is thinly cut and sculpted in a sublime manner, with figures of cherubs holding medallions with the heads of Caesars and other figures in Renaissance style. Oil lamps were placed inside these extremely rare vases and positioned at the top of a staircase or passageway to illuminate the surroundings.
