Gilded bronze buckle, in relief, for a soldier of the Pontifical Carabinieri corps, Pius IX period

With original loops and hooks, the white leather "underlining" is still present on the back.
It measures approximately 90 x 76mm, in excellent condition.

The Papal Carabinieri, the gendarmerie corps of the Papal States, were founded in 1816 by Pius VII to unify the police forces of the Papal States. In 1849, the corps took the name of the Regiment of Pontifical Veliti. It was disbanded in 1971 and transformed into the current Gendarmerie Corps of the Vatican City State.
