Large and Rare Tapestry, China, 1967.

Height 210 cm; Length 270 cm
These tapestries were made in China during the period of the so-called "Cultural Revolution," 1966-1976, commemorated in the slogan at the bottom: "Long live the victory of the great Cultural Revolution of the proletariat." Mao is flanked by Defense Minister Lin Biao and his wife Jiang Qing, who hold the Little Red Book in their hands. All three are surrounded by the red rays of the sun illuminating the people.
Artifacts like these were created by teams of skilled weavers who applied the principles of socialist realism to an ancient art like embroidery.
Published in the catalogue “Contemporary Chinese Art,” Electa, Milan 2006; published in the catalogue “The Great Image: Forms of Maoist Propaganda Art,” Museo Capitolare, Atri.
