French silver and ivory coffee pot, Paris, 1786-1789

Height: 18 cm. Width with handle: 19 cm. Total weight: 390 g
French silver coffee pot, with a pear-shaped body typical of coffee pots from the second half of the 18th century, resting on three hoofed feet adorned with engraved vegetal-inspired decoration, a distinctive element of the Louis XVI style. Pourer with spout adhering to the body enriched by a foliate decoration at the base, recalling naturalistic motifs typical of the period, and hinged lid with knob-shaped finial and a leaf-decorated thumb rest. Turned ivory radial handle (Elephas maximus Linnaeus, 1758 or Loxodonta africana Blumenbach, 1797). This model exemplifies the Louis XVI style, distinguished by elegant lines, nature-inspired ornamentation, and a strong sense of formal balance. It fits within the broader context of coffee’s emergence as a prestigious beverage in European courts, where there was a demand for highly decorative and refined serving objects.
The use of silver with finely chiseled details and the turned ivory handle are typical features of coffee pots from this era, designed for the elite consumption of coffee in the late 18th century.

Hallmarked with the marks in use in Paris between 1786 and 1789, fermier Henry Clavel and with the mark of silversmith Bouty Louis-Joseph known as Milleraud Bouty.
