Pair of candlesticks in ebony and ivory, Austro-Flemish area, 16th โ 17th century
Weight I: 229 g. Weight II: 219.5 g
Antique pair of ebony wood candlesticks (Diospyros spp.) with carved elephant ivory elements (Elephas maximus Linnaeus, 1758 or Loxodonta africana Blumenbach, 1797).
Height x width x depth I: 34 x 13 x 12 cm
The candlesticks rest on a tripartite base supported by flattened ball feet, while the shaft features alternating turned, fluted and decorated sections, enriched with geometric details and ornamental motifs in a clearly neoclassical or historicist style.
Between these elements are small ivory inserts, finely carved with geometric motifs, while the top ends with a chiselled ivory acorn finial.
The design and workmanship recall the European style of the 19th century, a period in which ebony and ivory objects were highly prized for court furnishings and aristocratic collections.
The precision of the turning and the refinement of the ivory inserts clearly indicate European production, probably German or Austrian.
Height x width x depth I: 34 x 13 x 12 cm
Height x width x depth II: 33.5 x 12.5 x 12 cm
