Box in ebony and red marble, Italy, Early 17th - late 18th centuries
Height x width x depth: 33.5 x 24.5 x 31 cm
with an ebonised wood base and antique red marble inserts, probably Spanish broccatello marble, characterised by vivid white and yellow-ochre veins on a red background. The structure, with a quadrangular plan, has a truncated pyramid-shaped hinged lid with marble panels framed by ebony profiles. At the top is a bronze statuette depicting a lion, used as an ornamental handle. The body of the box is divided by marble panels set within dark wooden frames. On the front is a bronze heraldic motif with an eagle with outstretched wings and a central shield, probably a family emblem or noble coat of arms. The base is supported by bronze feet in the shape of lion paws.
