Box in wood, bone and tortoiseshell, Italy, second half of the 17th century

Height x width x depth: 9 x 25.5 x 17.5 cm
with wooden structure covered with tortoiseshell plates (hawksbill sea turtle, Eretmochelys imbricata, Cheloniidae) and engraved bone.
Rectangular in shape and set on four spherical feet, it closes at the front with a small metal lock. The wooden structure is covered with tortoiseshell plates arranged in squares, bordered by frames and fillets in engraved bone with geometric and phytomorphic motifs. When opened, the lid reveals a refined floral decoration engraved on bone on the inside, while the interior of the box is divided into various compartments, with a section in the centre concealing four small drawers intended to hold small objects, coins or valuables.
