Nautilus mounted on an oval pewter base, Europe, 19th century

Height x width x depth: 16 x 17 x 10 cm. Weight: 600 g
decorated with a naturalistic motif depicting rocks interspersed with elements of red Mediterranean coral. The shell is richly decorated with natural motifs and mythological dolphins. The upper part, corresponding to the opening of the shell, has a hinged closure made of the same material as the base, adorned with a fantastical marine figure, probably a dolphin with a small piece of coral applied to its tail.
