Nautilus shell, Western Europe, second half of the 19th century

Height x width x depth: 20 x 19 x 9 cm. Weight: 520 g
mounted on a circular moulded metal base, into which the shell is inserted and set. The opening area is adorned with rich metal decoration featuring scroll motifs and geometric elements, embellished with coloured glass paste inlays. On the opposite side, a shaped scroll element serves as a handle, giving the whole piece the appearance of a small container or ornamental cup. Both the base and the decorative mountings show traces of green paint.
