Sawfish, Italy or Germany, early 17th - late 18th century
Height x width x depth: 162 x 25 x 25 cm. Height x diameter: 111 x 18 cm
commonly known as the smalltooth sawfish, mounted as an ornamental piece.
The base, made of dark wood and embellished with gold applications, has a pyramidal structure culminating in a spherical knot from which the rostrum rises solemnly vertically.
In terms of style and materials, this gilded mount clearly refers to the late Baroque and Rococo European taste, particularly between the late 17th and 18th centuries, a period in which it was common practice to include natural specimens, such as corals, shells, horns and exotic fish, in aristocratic collections and Wunderkammern.
The dark finish of the base, contrasted by gilded elements, and the taste for vegetal rendering in the metal applications suggest Italian or southern German production, regions particularly active in the creation of decorative mounts for studies and cabinets of curiosities.
