Walking stick with sea ivory handle, Southern Italy, 19th century

Height x width x depth: 91 x 3.3 x 9.5 cm
carved in the shape of a duck's head. The surface of the handle is decorated with a criss-cross pattern reminiscent of the animal's feathers. The eye of the duck's head is an element made of red Mediterranean coral. Under the handle is a metal element engraved with the inscription: ‘Bruno Orioli Baron degli Amato di Amantea’. This detail indicates that the stick probably belonged to a figure of nobility or otherwise of high rank.
