Wood carving with ivory inserts, Indo-Portuguese, late 17th - early 18th century
Height x width x depth: 21.5 x 10 x 8.5 cm Total weight: 368.6 g
The composition features in the center a female figure with nimbus, probably St. Anne, seated on an ornate throne, her veil framing her face carved in ivory. To her left is a smaller figure, probably a child, also rendered with remarkable detail.
The throne features a Baroque structure, with decorative elements typical of European taste, but reinterpreted through local artistic sensibility, giving life to a work that merges Western aesthetics and Eastern techniques.
The traces of gilding and the worn polychromy bear witness to the antiquity of the work and its devotional use.
