The Dormition of the Virgin, 19th century

Diameter x depth: 54 x 3.5 cm
In the center of the composition Mary, lying on her deathbed, is mourned by the apostles; her soul is portrayed as a babe in swaddling clothes in the arms of the Lord.
The story narrates that one day, as Mary was praying for her Son to take her with him, the angel Gabriel appeared to her and informed her that her request would soon be granted. After this prediction she expressed her desire to see the apostles one last time; these, who at that time were in various places preaching the Gospel, are prodigiously transported in a cloud to the place where the Virgin lies, reason why in some representations we find the apostles carried and framed by clouds.
