Pair of prints featuring allegorical scenes, 18th century
Height x depth: 41 x 34 cm
based on works by Samuel Shelley. The two compositions, conceived as a pair, unfold an allegorical narrative on the theme of love. In Love Wounded, Venus, draped in soft folds of fabric, leans with a sympathetic gesture toward a small winged Cupid, captured in the act of moving toward her: the scene, suspended on a cloud, conveys a sense of vulnerability and protection, underscored by the serene landscape in the background. In Love Healed, the atmosphere becomes more dynamic and luminous: two winged figures soar through the sky, while a smoking torch, a symbol of rekindled and purified love, introduces the theme of emotional rebirth.
The inscriptions at the bottom provide the complete publication details: “London, March 14th 1798. Published by Jno. Young, No. 58 Upper Charlotte Street, Fitzroy Square”.
