Pair of coin cabinet tortoiseshell inlaid, Rome, 18th century

Height x width x depth: 153 x 115 x 43,5 cm.
with poplar frame, ebonised wood, tortoiseshell (hawksbill sea turtle, Eretmochelys imbricata, Cheloniidae) and bronze inserts, resting on finely carved bases.
The pair of coin boxes features a highly refined architectural design: the front is divided into four vertical rows of symmetrically arranged drawers, each decorated in the centre with an oval-shaped tortoiseshell element surrounded by gilt bronze scrollwork. The centre drawer is topped by an architectural gable door, the interior of which conceals a secret compartment with three small drawers. The door is embellished in the centre with a figure of a Roman warrior for each coin box, inserted within a niche structure that lends a solemn, theatrical air to the façade.
The decorative ensemble plays on the colour contrast between the dark depth of the ebony and the brightness of the tortoiseshell, with metallic touches that emphasise the focal points.
The coin cabinets rest on finely carved bases, each with a drawer, supported by four turned balustrade elements, joined by shaped crossbars converging in the centre in a sculpted vase, inside which are decorative shells.

This lot is currently in storage in Piobbico (PU) with the owner.
