Polychrome terracotta sculpture, Southern Europe, 19th century
Height x width x depth: 120 x 45 x 33 cm.
depicting the Virgin Mary in a standing pose, holding the Baby Jesus on her right side. The sculpture rests on a decorated octagonal plinth. The Madonna is wrapped in rich drapery, wearing a deep red inner tunic, with a large dark blue cloak covering her head and shoulders. The Virgin's face is idealised, with a fixed gaze and a composed expression. The Baby Jesus is depicted naked, with a simple modelling that evokes his tender age. His figure is firmly supported by Mary's right arm.
