Sculpture depicting the Pietà, Lombardy, 16th century

Height x width x depth: 67 x 62 x 23 cm
Made of walnut wood, originating from Lombardy and dating to the 16th century, depicting the theme of the Pietà.
The Pietà is one of the most moving depictions in Christian art, portraying the Virgin Mary holding the lifeless body of Christ taken down from the cross. The subject, which developed in the Germanic and Bohemian regions beginning in the 13th century (the so-called “Vesperbilder”), spread to Italy during the 14th century, finding particular popularity during the Renaissance, where it was reinterpreted with a new pathos and naturalism.
The sculpture in question, carved from walnut and of relatively modest dimensions, features an intensely dramatic and heartrending composition. The Virgin, wrapped in a heavy cloak, her face sorrowful and composed, holds the body of Christ resting on her knees. The body of the Redeemer is carved with remarkable anatomical precision, evident in the taut muscles of the torso and the slender legs. The drapery of Mary’s robe is carved with deep vertical grooves, while Christ’s face displays a suffering yet serene expression, with half-closed eyes and a beard rendered in small curls. Its dating to the 16th century, within the Lombard region, is supported by both stylistic and technical elements. Walnut wood, typical of Po Valley and Alpine production, was widely used in sacred sculpture for its strength and malleability. The work exhibits Renaissance traits: the formal composure, the naturalistic rendering of Christ’s body, and the overall balance of the composition reflect a late 15th-century sensibility that evolved further into the high 16th century. However, certain stylized elements also remain in the rendering of the drapery and in Mary’s face, indicating a persistence of late-Gothic motifs, still evident in Lombard sculpture from the pre-Alpine region between Bergamo and Valtellina.
