The Triumph of Galatea, Neapolitan School, 18th century

oil on canvas
Height x width with frame: 106 x 81 cm
Depicted in an elaborate shell-shaped carriage being pulled across the water, the nymph is surrounded by cherubs and putti. A long golden ribbon floats above her head, a device that suggests movement. The theme draws inspiration from Raphael’s Renaissance prototype in the Villa Farnesina, reinterpreted with the chromatic sensibility of the mature Baroque period. Contemporary gilded frame.
