Gold shell cameo brooch, 1971

Engraved on a Sardonian shell, it depicts a scene of dance and music featuring numerous figures in motion, and is fully representative of the master’s mature work.
The quality of the engraving — evident in the rendering of the drapery, the definition of the faces and the complexity of the composition — suggests the hand of an expert engraver, likely belonging to the circle of the finest Torre del Greco masters of the 20th century.
The 14-carat gold setting, embellished with a decorative motif of musical instruments, further emphasises the precious nature of the object, conceived as a piece of fine goldsmithing as well as a work of engraving art.

Cameo signed ‘NOTO’, 1971, and setting hallmarked ‘14k’.
Dimensions of the face: 10 x 7 cm. Weight: 48.1 g.
Literature:
Giovanni Noto
(Torre del Greco, 1902 – 1985)
An engraver and master craftsman active in Torre del Greco throughout the 20th century, Giovanni Noto belongs to the distinguished tradition of the Torre del Greco cameo school, internationally renowned for its work in shell and coral.
Trained locally within a context still closely tied to the direct transmission of artisanal skills, he developed a body of work characterized by a high level of technical mastery and a marked sculptural sensitivity. His production is distinguished by the ability to render complex figural compositions in relief, often inspired by classical sources, with a refined articulation of planes and a remarkable sense of spatial depth, achieved through the skilful exploitation of the chromatic layers of the shell.
Particularly noteworthy is his production of large-scale cameos with elaborate subjects, featuring animated scenes populated by multiple figures, as seen in compositions of musical or festive inspiration. In such works, a complete command of narrative language emerges: the figures, dynamic and finely modelled, are arranged in space with a fluid rhythm, while the contrast between the orange ground and the white relief enhances the chiaroscuro effect.
Today attracting increasing interest among collectors, Giovanni Noto’s production represents one of the most significant expressions of the continuity of the glyptic tradition of Torre del Greco, bridging the transition from artistic craftsmanship to production intended for the international market.
