Large painting of Chinese ancestors, China, Qing dynasty (1644-1911), late 19th century, China, Qing dynasty, 19th century.

Inks and pigments on silk
Height 184 cm; Length 170 cm
The painting represents filial virtue, an important value in the Chinese Confucian pyramidal vision. The son of the family is at the center of the painting, kneeling before the altar to honor the ancestor worship associated with the Chinese New Year ceremony. In the center, we can see the image of a dog, indicating the zodiac year to which the period corresponds. Below, the central door of the rich and important family home opens onto a traditional scene of New Year festivities.
