The painting is a replica of an invention by Paolo Veronese known in several autograph versions, including those now in the Frick Collection, New York, and the Museu de Arte de São Paulo, Brazil. Various contemporary or slightly later copies of the composition are known, attesting to its great success mainly in the Venetian context, first and foremost thanks to the artist’s remarkable ability to give clear and effective visual form to the unusual and complex iconography.
