The painting derives from a canvas by Joshua Reynolds now preserved at Kenwood House, London, and represents a significant testimony to the success of the mythological subjects developed by the master. The Kenwood House prototype perfectly embodies Reynolds’s concept of the Grand Style, in which the nobility of the subject is combined with a learned revival of the Italian Renaissance tradition, capable of ennobling natural observation through the filter of classical ideals.
