In the study accompanying the painting, Enrico Maria Dal Pozzolo notes that in this powerful portrait the direct execution of Jacopo Tintoretto should be identified in the doge’s face, due to the fluid brushwork and sculptural force typical of the master. As often occurred in the production dynamics of the Tintoretto workshop, the less demanding parts of official portraits (doges in particular, but also senators and procurators), after an initial fully or largely autograph execution, were subsequently entrusted to assistants, who were required to faithfully maintain the master’s stylistic imprint.
At least three other versions of the portrait of Doge Girolamo Priuli (in office from 1 November 1559 until his death on 4 November 1567) are known: those in the Institute of Arts in Detroit, the former Getty Museum in Malibu, and the Gallerie dell’Accademia in Venice, none of which can be considered entirely autograph by Jacopo Tintoretto. In the present version as well, in agreement with Dal Pozzolo, the figure of the doge and the hands should be attributed to an assistant, possibly to be identified among the three sons of Jacopo who were painters: Domenico, Marco, and Marietta.
