The painting draws inspiration from the composition of the Salome with the Head of Saint John the Baptist, Titian’s youthful masterpiece now preserved in the Galleria Doria Pamphilj, Rome. Of particular note is the significant stylistic variation introduced in the face of the female figure, clearly derived from Leonardesque models.
