Bacchus. 18th-19th century. Black bituminous patina.

13.5 x 6.5 x 4.5 cm
A small Bacchus, or allegory of autumn. Crowned with vine leaves, his goatskin knotted over his shoulder to form a sack filled with grapes. A cup is raised in his right hand.

A valuable sculpture with a splendid black patina, showing slight wear. The fleece, brimming with grapes and vine leaves, is beautifully detailed. The model is unknown, but it was certainly made with archaeological imitation in mind.

Study object.
