Mercury. Based on Giambologna's model. 18th-19th century. Patinated bronze. Original bronze and marble base.
Overall 78 x 28 x 18 cm
The Flying Mercury is one of Giambologna's most famous and replicated sculptures.
The antique replicas are masterpieces created by the great master's direct followers, such as Antonio Susini. In the 18th century, foundries replicated the classical subjects of Renaissance masters for collectors on the Grand Tour. In Rome alone, we recall Zoffoli, Righetti, and, in the 19th century, Boschetti.
The Mercury presented here is based on the Kunsthistorisches model and lacks the caduceus, just like the one in the Vienna Museum. Other period copies are held in well-known museums such as the Bargello, Florence.
Our casting is of good quality and rests on a beautiful cylindrical base decorated with innocent cherubs playing with allegories of the arts and sciences.
Books, telescopes, and compasses (for architecture or for Freemasonry?).
The transparent hazelnut-colored patina is beautiful.
