Spiritello. From the model by Donatello. Anonymous foundry, 19th century. Bronze, transparent hazelnut patina.
35.5 x 12 x 15 cm
The Spirit with a Tambourine derives from a work by Donatello from 1429, from the baptismal font of the Church of San Giovanni in Siena, now in the Bode Museum in Berlin.
The Grand Tour taste loved to collect artistic replicas of classical sculptures and also of the great Florentine Renaissance masters.
Our Spiritello, a mix between a pagan genius and a Christian Angel, is well represented by Donatello naked, in contrast and with a mocking look: a perfect synthesis of the humanistic culture of the early Renaissance, of the sacred united with the profane.
