Hercules and Antaeus. Galeazzo Mondella, known as Moderno (Verona, 1464- Rome, 1528). Plaque.

mm 85 x 66 x 5
Moderno was one of the most important Renaissance plaquette makers. He began his career in Verona, influenced by the work of Venetian and Lombard artists such as Mantegna and Pier Jacopo Allari Bonacolsi, known as Antico.

The plaque in question is one of his most fascinating works, linked to the theme of the Labours of Hercules.

Present in various museums and with several variations, ours can be compared to the one in the Carrand collection held at the Bargello, Florence. The plaque's frame is slightly larger than ours, resulting in a slight difference in size.
The one in the Bargello measures 78.8 x 58.5 mm.
